The blue flag

Lignano Sabbiadoro has earned its fourteenth blue flag from the FEEE, an international organisation for environmental education. This acknowledgement is awarded to towns and ports that work hard to keep their beaches clean and their port areas well organised, and is based on criteria for assessment defined by the FEEE, such as suitability for bathing of the waters, the absence of industrial waste or sewage outlets, efficient refuse collection and adequate hygiene and sanitary facilities.

Additionally, the fourteenth blue flag rewarded Lignano Sabbiadoro for its environmental programme drawn up by the municipal administration, and for the inland services that contribute to ensuring that visitors have a pleasant and enjoyable holiday.

LIGNANO AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Exactly halfway between Venice and Trieste , the peninsula of Lignano Sabbiadoro lies between the wide delta of the river Tagliamento, the warm waters of the Adriatic and the enchanting Marano Lagoon. With over eight kilometres of fine sandy beaches lying between the sea and a dense pine forest , which still covers a large proportion of this, an area where the town has developed in harmony with nature, without marring its beauty.

Ernest Hemingway visited Lignano in the Spring of 1954 and called it “the Florida of Italy ”. The author loved the uncontaminated scenery of the facing lagoon that it inspired one of his greatest books: Across the River and Into the Trees.

Lignano: Punta Verde Zoo Park

An enchanted oasis with a rich vegetation, run through by streams and small lakes, it could well be considered one of the best equipped in Italy: here the animals, 1200 specimens belonging to 200 different species, live in large shelters and enclosures realized with natural materials. Despite being held in captivity, they reproduce at much higher rates than in similar ordinary situations.
